Guastavino Tile
Paying homage to an iconic NYC style
The interior of St. John’s Terminal strives to link New York’s past and present. For the building’s events hub auditorium, called The Bandshell, local artisans installed tiling inspired by Rafael Guastavino, a Spanish immigrant to New York who patented a technique found in many significant public spaces across the city, including Ellis Island, Grand Central Terminal, and the subway system.

The Bandshell is part of SJT’s two-story events hub, which features the 350-seat auditorium, adjacent terrace space, pre-function gathering areas, and a variety of breakout spaces and board rooms. The events hub is one of several spaces dedicated to partner-based works. Providing space where clients can come in and spend the day collaborating with Googlers, literally working shoulder to shoulder, is key to understanding their needs and working together to find creative solutions.
